When planning to drive in Japan, one of the most common sources of confusion is understanding the difference between a JAF translation and an International Driving Permit (IDP). Getting this wrong could mean being turned away at a rental car counter — or worse, driving illegally.
What Is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
An IDP is a document issued by motoring associations in your home country (such as the AAA in the USA or the ADAC in Germany). It translates your license into multiple languages and is recognized in most countries worldwide under the 1949 or 1968 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.
However, Japan has a specific rule: it only accepts IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Countries that signed only the 1968 convention — which includes Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, and others — cannot use their IDP in Japan.
What Is a JAF Translation?
A JAF translation is issued specifically for Japan and replaces the IDP requirement for certain countries. It is an official document prepared according to JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) standards, which Japanese police and rental companies recognize.
You must carry your original foreign license alongside the JAF translation at all times when driving in Japan.
Which Document Do You Need?
Here is a quick reference guide:
- Switzerland → JAF translation required
- Germany → JAF translation required
- France → JAF translation required
- Belgium → JAF translation required
- Monaco → JAF translation required
- Taiwan → JAF translation required
- USA, UK, Canada, Australia → IDP accepted (1949 convention)
How Long Is the JAF Translation Valid?
A JAF translation is valid for one year from the date of issue. If you plan multiple trips to Japan, you will need to renew it for each year. However, the application process is quick and fully online through JDLTC.
Can I Use My IDP from Germany/Switzerland in Japan?
No. If your country signed only the 1968 Vienna Convention (not the 1949 Geneva Convention), your IDP will not be accepted in Japan. Japanese rental companies are required to check this, and most will refuse your rental if you only present an IDP from these countries.
